4 Clean Eating Tips to Improve Your Overall Health

4 Clean Eating Tips to Improve Your Overall Health
SHARE
How ‘clean’ do you eat? Clean eating is all about eating more natural nutrient-dense foods and limiting processed foods such as snack foods and sweets. In this article, learn the benefits of clean eating along with four ways it can improve your overall health.

What is Clean Eating?

Clean eating is a style of eating that emphasizes the quality of foods you eat. It focuses on foods that are directly sourced from nature, rather than processed foods. These foods are high-quality natural foods that don’t contain pesticides, hormones, or GMOs, which can be harmful to the body. Processed foods are loaded with calories, added sugars, and lack beneficial nutrients.

The benefits of clean eating include getting plenty of vitamins, minerals, high-quality proteins, and healthy fats from clean foods such as vegetables and grass-fed meats. These foods are shown to assist in weight management, build a stronger immune system , and increase energy levels.

Below are four clean eating practices to start improving your health.

1. Go Organic

Feed your body food and substances it recognizes, straight from nature. The pesticides we spray on foods or dyes we add to seafood to make them look more appetizing are the same chemicals that can ruin our health. Since our bodies cannot process inorganic compounds or heavy metals, they get stored in our fat cells and muscle tissues. Over time, toxins can build up to the point of illness or chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia or arthritis. So, the easiest way to go organic is to shop at your local farmer's market or grow food at home!

2. Try a Detox Diet

There are several ways you can detoxify your system. One way is to go on a diet of detoxifying foods. Liver friendly and lymph-clearing foods such as artichoke and beets help boost your energy, while lemons are rich in Vitamin C and enzymes to help build your immune system and aid metabolism.

Of course, a phytonutrient-rich diet, plenty of water, and regular sleep and exercise will mean less toxin buildup in the first place, and hopefully, less reliance on doctors or medicines down the road.

3. Eat Alkalizing Foods

A proper pH balance in your body keeps body fluids such as blood, water and lymph running clear. You can balance your pH by eating less acid producing food such as processed meats and grains and eating more alkalizing foods such as fresh leafy vegetables and fruits. Drinking a shot of raw apple cider vinegar is also helpful.

4. Get Your Microbes on Track

We can never rid our bodies entirely of bacteria. In fact, we would never want to. Instead, the goal is to keep ourselves flourishing with friendly, healthy microbes who can do their job of keeping everything in balance.

Beneficial microbes communicate with our immune cells in the same way that an infectious, pathogenic bug would. Good gut bacteria also reduce inflammation, aid digestion and fight infection. You can get these friendly bugs from fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha, or pickled ginger.

Once you start incorporating more natural, clean foods into your diet and limiting processed inorganic foods, it’s easy to stay healthier overall. Then, this can naturally spill over into a new way of seeing and loving the planet we call home and the nutritious food it provides us with.
