Everything is connected…” We hear this statement all the time but it can be very difficult to comprehend. How are we connected to everything and where is the point of connection? And really...EVERYTHING?
While the connection we speak of is energetic, it can surely be felt physically.
An easy and immediate way to reestablish or strengthen your connection with the universal oneness all around and within, is through your own body and mind.
In eastern medicine, the body is seen as one complete organism. In western medicine, we have specialists that focus on one area of the body and generally disregard the rest. But because we know that everything is connected, within and without us, then surely your shoulder and your hip must have a meeting point, right? Yes, the navel.
As our first source of nutrients, life and worldly connection, the navel is not only important when we are in the womb, but throughout our lives.
Ilchi Lee, founder of CYE and international mind-body expert, discovered that by applying acupressure techniques to the navel, he could detect imbalances, blockages and tension throughout the body. But how? How is this point, which you probably previously considered to be insignificant, connected to the entire body?
There are 8 general points around the belly button that correspond with different organs and body parts located in that direction and intersect with meridians (energetic highways that carry life force energy). We can expand these points to infinity when our awareness is at its highest, but for starters, we’ll stick with these 8 points.
Sense Your Connection
Before you start, scan your entire body with your mind, identifying any pain points or areas you feel tension, pain, stress, or off balance.
-
Take a deep breath in, filling the entire abdomen, and release all the air in your lungs by pulling your navel inwards towards the spine. Do this three times and disconnect from everything but the present moment. Be here now.
-
Place your thumb in your belly button and hold it there firmly but gently for at least a minute. Close your eyes and just observe the sensations (heartbeat, tenderness, discomfort, anything that pops up, just observe don’t judge.)
-
Go around your belly button starting at the 12 o’clock position and move clockwise spending at least 10-seconds in each position.
-
If you feel tension in one area, think back to your body scan before you started and see if there is also physical pain or stress in the same area.
-
When tension is detected, breathe into that point mindfully and purposefully, and increase the pressure you apply with your finger (or the Belly Button Healing wand).
