Does passion have a numerical value? If you were to measure happiness, what number on the thermometer would it be?
Our language is full of references to a temperature scale to describe emotion and body sensation. When we find someone particularly attractive we say they are "hot." When we want a person who is acting anxious to calm down we tell them to "chill." When someone is "hot headed" we tell them to "cool off." Even when we go to the doctor with a body ache he will ask us, on a scale of 1 through 10, where is the pain and is it burning or dull.
But when we talk about having a balanced life, body and mind, it's easy to forget the important role that body temperature plays in our overall health.
We can exercise and cleanse and beautify our bodies, improve and strengthen our mind and even connect our minds to our highest self. But if the vessels in which we exist—our bodies— are not at a balanced temperature, doesn't provide a supportive environment for our energy, we cannot thrive.
The human body maintains a healthy condition within a temperature range between 97.7 and 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit (36.5 and 37.5 degrees Celsius). Within that one degree, our physical health, energy, comfort and happiness are maintained. Going just a few degrees lower or higher can negatively impact our health and our lives.
Generally, when the body is in a state of comfortable rest or in meditation, it’s about 97.7°C, and when you’re most active physically and mentally, your temperature is about 99.5°C. Of course, many other conditions—such as pregnancy, hormonal changes, body mass—factor into variables that may fall outside this normal range.
Not only is there "body" temperature, did you know that your mind and even your energy has temperature? Energetic temperature is connected to our emotions, and the temperature of the mind is related to your soul. If you’re stuck in unhealthy emotions such as worry, anxiety, anger, and sadness, your energy's temperature will be unbalanced. If you become distant from your soul and your communication with yourself is not fluid, your mind's temperature will be off as well. In both instances your natural ability to heal becomes weakened.
But you are the controller of your own temperature. You could even say that your mind is a kind of mental mercury and your body is the thermometer.
The key to recovering your
natural healing power is to optimize your body temperature and maintain a state of equilibrium as much of the time as possible.
When you can sense the "energy" of your body temperature, not just the sensation of cool or warm, you focus your consciousness on your body. When your awareness is focused on your body, your thoughts and emotions become still and the switch for your natural healing power is turned on.
All life forms, even the earth itself, is highly sensitive and dependent on temperature. If the earth became just a little closer to the sun than it is now in terms of distance, or just a little further, all life forms on the earth would either burn to death or freeze to death. The reason that all of the ecosystems currently on the earth are sustained is because the earth is maintaining the appropriate temperature, and distance from the sun, for vital activity.
When your body temperature is ideal your natural healer is awake and thriving. The best way to maintain optimal temperature is through activities that focus your mind and stimulate your sensory awareness.
Two exercises that are excellent for both focus and sensory awareness are
Plate Balancing and
Toe Tapping. Plate balancing offers both focus and body alignment and raises your temperature fast. Toe tapping is an easy exercise that you can do almost anywhere, at any time that stimulates Qi and quickly sends energy throughout your entire body.
