Our immune systems are much more connected to our entire bodies than we may think. Yes, of course, your immune system protects you from catching a cold or the flu but it is also responsible for allergies, cancer, arthritis and thyroiditis.
When the immune system affects the body in these ways, it is working against the body rather than protecting it. This is called autoimmunity. Autoimmune diseases are thought to be the underlying cause of more than 100 chronic illnesses - but this is not widely accepted in the Western Medical community. Additionally, of the 50 million Americans living with an autoimmune disease, 75% are women.
But why is this? Why are women affected at such a higher rate than men?
A woman’s immune system is more developed than a man’s, which makes it more resistant to infection, but also more susceptible to autoimmune diseases. We also tend to experience and suppress a wider range of emotions than men, which become lodged in the gut when not dealt with or released.
Protecting and strengthening the immune system to fight against everything from the common cold to cancer, is a collaboration between mind and body. If we allow emotions to go unexpressed and keep thoughts endlessly swirling in our minds, they eventually have to go somewhere.
In Eastern Medicine, physical symptoms are the manifestation of something that has not been addressed. Unexpressed emotions tend to get stuck in the gut, where the majority of the immune system lives, and can weaken the immune system, creating a wide array of physical symptoms.
Using the mind to strengthen the immune system will also help you become more in-tune with your body and more capable of listening to it when something is out of whack.
