Mother Nature provides us with many remedies we need to heal, empower, and enrich our health. One of the most powerful natural remedies for inflammation (and many other ailments) is turmeric golden milk.
Turmeric is a root herb, related to ginger, that has been referred to as “the spice of life” for millennia across cultures. Curcumin, the main ingredient found in turmeric, is the magic component that makes the spice highly therapeutic. Commonly found in curry recipes, this spice can do much more than just add flavor to a dish.
Turmeric is known primarily for its powerful anti-inflammatory properties and because of that, it is a common remedy for a wide array of ailments including joint pain, eczema, high blood pressure, cancer, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, mental disorders, etc - all caused by inflammation.
Adding this spice to your diet is easy—it can be found at just about any natural grocery store in the spice aisle (ground in a jar— look for the whole root in the fruit and veggie section, usually next to ginger). But if you don’t care much for the taste, one solution is to make Golden Milk.
Golden Milk is a warm tonic which contains key ingredients that amplify when combined. It is soothing to drink before bed and can even help you sleep better as turmeric targets the pineal gland, the gland responsible for producing melatonin,—which helps us fall asleep.
How to Make Turmeric Golden Milk
This simple recipe can be whipped up in under 10-minutes and serves up to 4 people. You can also make the full batch and store in the refrigerator until you are ready to heat up another day.
Ingredients:
-
2 cups of milk of choice (almond, pecan, coconut and dairy all work in this recipe)
-
1 cup filtered water
-
1 teaspoon turmeric (ground or grated fresh root)
-
1 tablespoon organic unrefined coconut oil
-
½ teaspoon cinnamon or 1 cinnamon stick
-
¼ teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper (increases absorption of turmeric)
-
¼ tsp ginger powder or small piece of fresh, peeled ginger root
-
Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
-
1 teaspoon raw honey or maple syrup to taste (optional)
Directions:
- On medium heat, combine all ingredients in a small saucepan to a boil and whisk until fully blended
- Cover and lower heat to simmer for 10 minutes
- Serve, sip and enjoy (and stir every once in awhile as ground turmeric will settle to the bottom)
Turmeric is also a warming spice, which brings the heat in the body to the power center: the lower abdomen (or DahnJon). When heat is concentrated in the power center, the head remains cool and the Water Up, Fire Down process is initiated. This balance and hot and cool energy keeps the mind clear and the body calm and connected to the earth, creating the ideal situation for total body health.
