Have you ever noticed that your mind has a part that watches itself, a kind of meta mind, or observer, that overlooks the mind’s activities? Most of us, I think, take this function of the mind for granted. But, actually, it’s very important. This mind function is actually the key to being a conscious creator of your life.
In order to be a conscious creator, your observer needs to become what I call a “creative observer.” A creative observer is a consciousness that can reach a
zero point, a deep mental state beyond thought or emotion at which your perception of your mental activity and the outer environment is clear and balanced, like a scale that has been calibrated to zero. When your consciousness is “zeroed,” its awareness is vast, transcending time and space.
To get a better idea of being at
zero point, picture yourself sitting at the center of the universe, from which you can see 360 degrees all around you without an atmosphere to block your view of the stars and the planets.
At
zero point, the observer part of your mind is in nothingness. Paradoxically, your observer is also in touch with the energy of the universe. You are aware of this energy and the feeling of it’s flow, and you can influence this flow with the focus of your mind.
At zero point, you sit in nothingness, at the source of all. From nothingness, you can see everything as it really is. And from nothingness, you can create anything. The scale of your consciousness can tip toward the positive or negative depending on what you want.
Looking at your mind and emotions from afar, you know that you are not your mind or your emotions. You also become more aware of aspects of yourself that you didn’t notice before. With that level of detachment, you can actually control them and use them for what you wish.
Turning the natural “watcher” function of your mind into a creative observer is the real purpose of meditation, whether it’s a form of meditation that involves passively watching your thoughts or meditation that involves focusing on something specific. Even moving meditation allows you to become a creative observer. In every case, if you do it often and/or long enough, your brain waves slow until the normal chatter of your mind stop, allowing your mind to sink down to the zero point.
When you keep part of your consciousness at the zero point, then every moment of your life becomes a time of conscious choice and joyful creation.
