Al Choi’s artwork creates space—space to pause, to feel, and to remember something essential. With each brushstroke, he weaves spiritual presence into form, drawing from decades of creative and contemplative practice. Based in South Korea, Al is both a painter and a meditation guide, using his art to gently reach into the deeper layers of human experience.
From Illustration to Inner Light
Al’s journey began in his twenties as an illustrator for a publishing house in South Korea. In his thirties, he lived in Arizona, balancing his path as both an artist and a meditation instructor. Now back in South Korea, he devotes himself to painting and art education. Years of immersion in meditation and energy practice have shaped his approach—painting is no longer just a skill or form of expression, but a vessel for something deeper: awareness, reverence, and return.
The name
Al, which he uses as an artist, comes from an ancient Korean word meaning “seed of light.” This idea is central to his work: that every person carries within them a spark of something luminous, and that art can help us reconnect to that inner light.
Al’s creative philosophy centers around attention—not as mental focus, but as presence. As he sees it: attention deepens into love, love into meditation, and deepening meditation naturally seeks expression as art.
The Beauty Within All Things
Rather than striving for perfection, Al’s work carries an energy that welcomes the full spectrum of experience. He reflects on the difference between prettiness and beauty: the former may stem from a longing for something idealized or unattainable, while the latter—true beauty—can be found in everything, even in sorrow, pain, and hardship. In his view, it is often these very experiences that awaken the most profound vitality within us.
Whether it’s the ancient strength of Mother Earth, the swirling energy of the cosmos, or the quiet pulse of life unfolding within the body, each painting is, for Al, like planting a seed—a simple gesture that, with time, may take root in the hearts of others. He seeks to reach beyond the light and shadow of life to touch the source itself. Like wildflowers taking root in the cracks of stone, he hopes his art will shine with the pure force of life.
